If you want to learn about any aspect of Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism or Baha'i, the specialized search engines reviewed in this article - Musalman.com, The Koran, Hinduism Today, BuddhaNet, and The Baha'i World - can be a great help. All provide access to original and interpretive documents that explain the philosophy and practices of these religions.

MUSALMAN.COM - COMPREHENSIVE SEARCH ENGINE FOR INFORMATION ABOUT ISLAM

Musalman.com is a well-designed search engine that provides extensive indexing of websites with material relating to Islam. You can pinpoint very specific information about Islamic viewpoints - both current and traditional - using this search engine.

Some special features are coverage of news from Muslim countries, links to Muslim radio broadcasts, and information about the US Congress helpful to Muslim activists. There are also fairly detailed subject channels (e.g. education, businesses, organizations and beliefs and practices) listing Muslim-related web sites.

Search Tips: There are two drop-down menus (labeled Proximity and Form) next to Musalman.com's search box.

The Proximity drop-down menu lets you control how close or far away your search words are to each other. For example, if you enter good evil in the search box and choose Sentence in the Proximity drop-down menu, Musalman.com will find documents with the terms good and evil in the same sentence.

Choose Rank if you want Musalman.com to list your documents on the basis of relevance. Opting for Rank also allows you to use the plus and minus signs to require or forbid search words.

The Forms drop-down menu controls how many forms of your keyword will be retrieved. Exact will retrieve only the exact word you enter. Other choices are Some (retrieves plurals and possessives) and Most.

Results: Search results in Musalman.com include the title, description, size and a relevance bar.

THE KORAN - AN EFFECTIVE AND STRAIGHTFORWARD SEARCH ENGINE

The Koran offers browsing and keyword searching of the entire Koran - no more, no less. The version that's indexed is the The Holy Qur'an, translated by M.H. Shaker.

Search Tips: The Koran has three menu-based search menus - Simple Searches, Proximity Searches, and Boolean Searches.

The Simple Search mode supports only searches using one word or phrase.

The Boolean Search mode supports the AND, OR and NOT operators. You can search for up to three terms or phrases. Another menu lets you require your search words to appear in the same verse or chapter.
