Going to School Underwater

Dec 14, 2001 - © Phil Napoli

Critical details such as focus, lighting, composition, and content are discussed in detail. Both the good features and unfavorable characteristics of each slide are fully critiqued so that each student can learn and improve from his own experience as well as the experiences of others. It is here in the classroom that basic and advanced skills required for successful underwater photography are taught and learned. Those students who make the most improvement during the week are the ones who leave their ego at the door and are willing to make large incremental changes to their technique. After class, the final hours of the day are normally spent having dinner, socializing with fellow students, and camera setup and preparation for the next day's shoot.

The highlight of the week and the culmination of the course occurs on the final night. Each student is asked to provide 10 of his or her best slides for participation in a finale slide show. All resort guests are invited to attend the show-a learning experience for them, increasing their appreciation of the underwater world. The presentation is narrated and set to music, which enhances the impact of the images. During the show, each student is introduced separately prior to viewing his or her work. The feeling of accomplishment is gratifying when the crowd acknowledges appreciation for what you and the other students have produced.

After recently participating in an advanced photo course run by Stephen Frink at the Flamingo Beach Resort in Bonaire, I realized that the learning process will never end for me. Many of the students in the class who can be described as serious photographers are in attendance on a yearly basis. This was the second course I have attended and it definitely will not be the last.
