Vacation and Dive the British Virgin Islands
The BVI National Parks Trust does an admirable job in protecting the underwater environment. The extensive use of moorings, implementation of fishing restrictions, and the participation of dive operators have contributed significantly to the preservation of good diving. Underwater visibility remains clear because of controlled land development. The health of corals and sea life is well documented providing a habitat and food for an extraordinary number of fish species. A REEF survey has documented 247 species in the BVI's, the second highest in the Caribbean. Favorite dive spots include Alice in Wonderland off Ginger Island where lush coral growth mounds make this an interesting and easy dive at 60 feet for all skill levels. The Indians, Santa Monica Rock, and Blonde Rock are dive sites around large outcroppings and offer a variety of fish life, marine growth, and sometimes current. Diving off the Dog Islands is easy from a protected bay and yields schools of tropicals in all colors and sizes. Of course the BVI's most famous dive site, the RMS. Rhone is a favorite with all divers. The wreckage is covered with orange cup corals, sponges, and sea fans and is home to hundreds of snappers, wrasse, jacks, and angelfish. A variety of sizes, prices, and amenities are offered in accommodations found on Tortola, Virgin Gorda, and Jost Van Dyke. The luxury 5-star Bitter End Yacht Club, Little Dix Bay, Biras Creek, and Peter Island Resorts offer impeccable service, luxurious rooms, gourmet cuisine, and activities galore. Many moderately priced beachfront hotels, resorts, guesthouses, and individual homes are perfect choices to enjoy the special personality of the British Virgin Islands. Diving and sailing excursions are readily available and give travelers a chance to explore BVI's famous underwater wrecks, reefs, and caves. Pack lightly, bring a good book, and let your cares drift away as you experience the understated elegance of the British Virgin Islands.
