Scrapbook Paper Piecing: How to Get Started and Find Patterns

Paper piecing is a popular scrapbook technique for albums. Paper piecing is simply the piecing together of paper. In a lot of ways, it is like putting together a puzzle. For example, if you have a teddy bear pattern, each arm and leg, the head, the body and so on, would be cut from a separate piece of paper or cardstock. These are then glued together, either onto themselves or your background paper, and they are usually detailed with lining (tracing the edges) and chalking (adding color to give it a more detailed look). When it comes to finding paper piecings, you have several options. One option is to purchase piecings already glued together and detailed. While there are some companies who do this, a popular place to find already made items is to visit auction sites such as eBay. You can also purchase sets that are already cut out and ready to glue, or you can purchase patterns. Outside of these choices, you can always make your own paper piecing patterns. Many scrappers enjoy creating their own specific patterns for the layouts they are working on. It is much more time consuming than getting a pattern already made, however. You also have another option and that is free patterns. Free patterns are just as great as the ones you would purchase, but without the price tag. Try Creativersity and look for paper piecing patterns under "Paper Arts."
