Piecing It Together

As a little girl I loved to play with paper dolls. I enjoyed punching out the shapes of the dolls, and then adding different clothes to the body. Now as an adult I find I'm drawn to paper piecing because it provides me with the fun of placing paper shapes together and making my own design.

Paper piecing is the process of cutting and pasting paper into shapes. Paper piecing is a fairly new paper technique to scrapbooking and it's becoming one of the most popular accents for your pages. With a few simple steps, paper piecing is easy to do. It does take a little time to do. To make paper piecing fit into your busy schedule consider cutting and piecing your patterns while watching t.v., waiting at the doctors office or during your lunch break at work.

Step By Step Before you begin to paper piece you will need a pattern. You can either use a pre-made pattern or make your own. If this is your first paper piecing project then go for a pre-made pattern. As you become more advanced you can make your own.

Step 1 - Gather your supplies. You'll need the pattern, scissors, acid-free adhesive, a stylus, a pencil and your favorite paper. If you want to add detail to your project then you'll need a black point pen and some chalk.

Step 2 - Transfer your pattern to your paper. This can be done a couple of ways. If you pull the pattern from the Internet, you can print it right onto your desired paper. Another way is to use a stylus and a lightbox and trace the pattern onto your paper. If the paper is too dark to see through then use carbon paper underneath to copy the pattern onto the paper. Finally, you can make a copy of your pattern and place the copy on top of your paper, hold it in place and trace onto your paper.

Step 3 - It's time to cut all out your pattern pieces. You may need two different sizes of scissors depending on your pattern. For detailed pieces use tiny scissors that can get in all the tiny spaces.

Step 4 - Now that all the pieces are cut out you need to glue them together. Follow the pattern.

Step 5 - After you've glued all the pieces together it's time to add some detail. With a pen, outline the form of the piece. Second, add chalk. Start at the edge of the piece and blend inward. Now you're done. See how easy that was?
