Simple Scrapbooks

What do golf, Christmas, college and family members have in common? They are all theme albums that I have completed. Three years ago, I put together a scrapbook for my paternal grandfather for his 90th birthday. I’ve also done a scrapbook on my college graduation, and most recently, I completed a scrapbook on my husbands’ favorite hobby, golf.

A theme album is defined as an album that is specifically focused on one subject or person. Stacy Julian of Creating Keepsakes calls them “Simple Scrapbooks.” She has written a book on these types of albums, and it has been so popular that there is now a magazine with the same name.

Why? Why do theme albums? Why not just add the pages to your regular album? Doing a theme album is a great way to show someone or something how much you care. These albums are very simple and quick to do. Most can be completed in a weekend. They make a perfect gift for someone.

Components There are several components to theme albums. The November/December 2002 issue of “Simple Scrapbooks” magazine provides the following definitions of these components. Title page - gives your album a name and lists the date and other identifying information. Sets the style for your entire album by introducing selected colors and accents. Dedication page – a place to explain your reasons behind the album or dedicate it to a specific person. Table of Contents – provides a quick overview of what’s included in your book, usually listing section titles. Often establishes a distinguishing design characteristic that’s used for each section, such as a specific color or decorative accent. Section Pages – introduces and separates each scrapbook section. Filler Pages – fills up the album or sections, sometimes added later as updates. The content is based on the album’s organization, and the pages can be as simple or detailed as you like. The design can coordinate with the other framework pages, although they’re typically not as detailed. Closing Page – the last page of the album and a place to add an “ending” to your book with a few summarizing thoughts, an inspirational quote or a parting photograph.

Steps 1. Decide on the theme of the album, and why and who you are making the album for? 2. What size and style of album will you use? 3. How will you organize your album? 4. What components will you use in your album? 5. What colors and decorations will you use? 6. What photos and additional information will you need to complete the album?
