Guess That Term


Ever wonder what makes a tertiary color are or what “pass the chocolate” means? Well, read on. You’ll find the answer to these words plus many more. Learning scrapbook lingo will help you become a more knowledgeable scrapbooker. No more guessing what the scrap experts are talking about.

I used two sources for the terms and definitions found in this article. The first one is Memory Makers magazine, July/August 2000. The second source is The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Scrapbooking by Wendy Smedley. After each definition I listed the source in parentheses.

Analogous Colors – Colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. (Idiots)

Archival Quality – A non-technical term that suggests a material or product is permanent, durable or chemically stable and that it can therefore be used safely for preservation purposes. (MM)

Buffered – Term used to describe products capable of maintaining the basicity of a solution. Buffered paper prevents acid from moving from a photo to paper. (Idiots)

CK OK – Creating Keepsakes Okay. Scrapbooking seal of approval; items that have the CK OK are considered safe to use in scrapbooks. (Idiots)

Collage – An artistic composition made of various materials (such as paper, cloth or wood) and glued onto a surface. (Idiots)

Complementary Colors – Colors that are opposite each other on a color wheel. (Idiots)

Conservationist – Someone who studies archival methods and techniques and uses them to preserve artifacts, artworks, or precious documents. (Idiots)

Double-Mount – To place a photo on two backgrounds. (Idiots)

Encapsulate – To enclose or encase objects such as memorabilia in a pocket or envelope. (MM)

Favorite File – A personal book of ideas and layouts. (Idiots)

Focal Point – The element of a design where lines converge. The eye is naturally drawn to the focal point in an image. (Idiots)

Genealogy – The study of the descent of a person, family or group from an ancestor. Many people who wish to create a family tree start by researching their family’s genealogy. (Idiots)

Handmade Scraps – Embellishments made from layered–looking die cuts. (Idiots)

Intensity – The strength of a color based on how true it is to the primary color. (Idiots)

Journaling – Any words you write in your book, from titles and captions to long descriptions, poems or stories. (Idiots)

Monochromatic Color Scheme – Employs different values of the same color. (Idiots)

Muted Colors – Subdued tints or shades of colors that tend to be more suitable for backgrounds. (Idiots)

Page Exchange – Participants are invited to create a page to share with other scrapbookers. Often, a theme is given, such as Halloween. Each participant brings enough copies of an original page to trade with others. (Idiots)
