Surveying The Remote Sensing Webscape

Before we dive in and start looking at some remote sensing computer applications, it will be helpful to build our reference library a bit so that we have somewhere to turn for insight. This week, then, we're going to look at a few web sites with a lot of great information about remote sensing.

The first stop on our tour is the satellite remote sensing and archaeology home page. This site offers lots of pictures illustrating the power of remote sensing while illustrating its importance in modern archaeology. This connection probably hadn't occurred to most, but remote sensing does, indeed, appear to be a great, noninvasive means of archaeological discovery. And, if visualization is your cup of tea, another good place to see many awesome satellite images is http://rsd.gsfc.nasa.gov/rsd/, run by the space experts at NASA.

The WWW Virtual Library: Remote Sensing is a vast repository of remote sensing information. With links to organizations in every part of the world, the reader is sure to find something of local interest. In addition, there is information about news groups, professional societies, trade publications and remote sensing conferences. Perhaps the richest offering is the section on "GIS and Other Related Fields," which offers a more nuts and bolts view of the topic.

Finally, we come to the educational portion of today's program as we turn the dial to the homepage for The Remote Sensing Core Curriculum. As you might suspect from the word "curriculum" in the title, this site focuses on educating people in the remote sensing sciences. As such, it is a great place to learn some of the basics. In fact, there are several informative slide shows on the web page available for your perusal. Check it out for yourself and see if you don't feel enlightened!
