Suite101.host Welcome to Science Careers for Young Women.

Suite101.host This chat is part of the "Take Our Daughters to Work Day" event here on Suite101.com. Thank you all for coming. Our guest today is Dr. Andreadis Andreadis, Associate Professor in the Department of Cell Biology at .K. Shriver Center, University of Massachusetts Medical School. Welcome to Suite101.com Dr. Andreadis.

Suite101.host Dr. Andreadis, to begin the chat, could you tell us something about yourself?

Dr. Andreadis I am a practicing research scientist (molecular biologist) and also a published writer of both fiction and non-fiction (I wrote The Biology of Star Trek).

Guest1 Oooo a Trekie.

Dr. Andreadis Not a Trekkie exactly. I just used ST as a convenient handle, because everyone knows about it.

Suite101.host Dr. Andreadis what sparked your interested in the sciences?

Dr. Andreadis I never thought I'd be anything but! I read unexpurgated Verne as a kid, and have always been curious. I love reading as well, and speak four languages, but science was always #1. Check my link for more details on a long story.

Guest1 What led you to the area of science you are in now?

Dr. Andreadis I was studying for both astrophysics and biochemistry. In my junior year at Harvard, molecular biology came into existence and so that led me down that path. Haven't given up on astrophysics, though.

Suite101.host It was a new area at that time Dr. Andreadis?

Dr. Andreadis Brand new! It gives you an amazing high to be one of the first practitioners of anything.

Suite101.host I am sure is does Dr. Andreadis.

Suite101.host We have all read that taking science or computer courses is viewed as being un-cool or carries a risk of being labeled a "geek" by young girls today. Dr. Andreadis do you agree with this perception?

Dr. Andreadis No. Scientists are a combination of warrior and wizard. They are also among the few things that make you a competent human being.

Guest2 <-----took marine biology in college........many young women took the course then .......it seemed they drifted away...............

Guest1 It must be exciting to be among the first in your field. Do you see more and more young women entering the same field as yourself?

Dr. Andreadis There is social pressure on women not to do science ("unfeminine"). But yes, women enter science in droves whenever they're actively not hindered.

Guest2 oic.........u can use AutoCAD to map it right............
