Conservation and Kids

I ran across two sites about conservation aimed at kids. Both are part of larger sites. I thought this was a great topic to look at in this week's article. So here we go.

Kids'Planet is a part of a larger conservation web site-Defenders of the Planet . Visit the fact sheets where you can look up various animals. Learn their status, description, habitat, food, behaviour and what threatens them. This is a good quick reference if you want to know something in a hurry about a listed animal. Unfortunately, most animals are either threatened or endangered.

The wolf curriculum for teachers (total lesson plans for kids in grades 6-9) is awesome. It is a comprehensive wolf education program that allows student to practice their skills in math, language arts, social studies and science while learning about wolves. All the information needed to do the lessons is provided. In order to view the lessons you need Adobe Acrobat Reader but a link is provided to download it. The reader is free. To give you an example of what the lessons entail, topics for the reading lessons include "Brief History of the Wolf in the United States", "Vital Statistics", and "Wolf and the Web of Life". Questions are asked at the end to test the student's comprehension of the articles.

Don't miss the game section. It is divided into games for younger children and a set for older children. Then drop by the story "Web of Life" told by a spider-an expert about webs.

Lastly, "Defend It" encourages kids who care about the environment to become involve by writing their senators or representatives about issues important to them. Some issues suggested by Kids' Planet are:

-the importance of conserving wildlife habitat.

-the need to stop polluting the land, air and water.

-the necessity of making laws that protect endangered species, such as wolves and grizzly bears.

"Defend It" goes on to say that kids should educate themselves about environmental and conservation issues. Know the facts. They should make an effort to conserve precious resources such as water and energy. But most importantly, they should learn to enjoy and appreciate nature.

President Bush and Congress are proposing drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. The site contains background information and what the threat to wildlife would be. If you want to get involved, read up on it and sign the online petition asking the U.S. government not to allow drilling in this wildlife refuge. You can register your protest even if you do not live in the States. Just don't include a State when filling out the form. (Feb 18, 2002: I reviewed this site and for an update on this issue check out Arctic National Wildlife Refuge ).
