2. Tape the cardboard to the backs of the thermometers, so that the bulbs are not exposed to the light.

3. Tape the thermometers to the inside of each bottle, so you can read the temperature from the outside.

4. Place a rock in each bottle. The rock will absorb some of the heat, and act like the ground on Earth.

5. Cover the top of one of the bottles with plastic wrap, and secure it with tape. Make sure the wrap is on securely and there are no holes.

6. Bottle #1 is your CONTROL bottle - the one without the plastic wrap. Bottle #2 will simulate the greenhouse.

7. Put the bottles into the sunlight, or place them an equal distance from the light source. Take the temperature of each bottle at the start, and then for every two minutes after that. Continue for 20 minutes.

8. Make a graph of time vs. temperature (time on the x-axis, temperature on the y-axis) and compare the temperatures of Bottle #1 and Bottle #2.

Extension:

Instead of using just the rock, you can add soil, plants or ice cubes to each bottle and then see how the temperature changes. Do you think the temperature will change faster or slower with different materials in the bottle? Test out your hypotheses.
