The Fog Rises
Nocturnal radiation fogs often bypass cities while rather thick fog forms in surrounding rural and suburban zones. Such fogs can make morning commutes hazardous for those living outside the city. The reason the urban area is spared the fog is that the city produces and holds heat much better than the more open, vegetated suburbs, and thus the city does not cool as deeply overnight. (That is why weather forecasts often call for nighttime low temperatures to be cooler in the suburbs and rural areas surrounding the city.) (Photographs courtesy of Spectrum Educational Enteprises)
