Pythagorean Numerology and Dreams

The Pythagoreans were Greek thinkers, and many follow Pythagorean philosophy and principles in the modern day. Those who follow the works of Pythagoras and those thinkers who followed with the same ideas and systems of thought primarily seek to bring order to a universe wrought with chaos. A predominant belief is that the universe is made up of corresponding pairs of opposites which are integral to the construction of the universe as a whole.

Pythagoreans believed in a series of ten fundamental opposites upon which the universe was based. Among them were the following pairs:

Odd and even

One and many

Left and Right

Male and Female

Good and Evil

With each pair having its numerical counterpart in odd or even numbers. One, right, male and good were thought to correspond with odd numbers, while many, left, female and evil were thought to correspond with even numbers.

Here is a basic breakdown of the individual numerical characteristics according to the nine part system of Pythagorean numerology:

1 - active, powerful, leading, purposeful, innovating, unsympathetic

2 - passive, weak, receptive, sympathetic, subordinate

3 - artistic, brilliant, lucky, easy success, happy, outgoing

4 - dull, plodding, unlucky, uncreative, introspective, failure

5 - adventurous, versatile, uncertain, nervous, sexuality

6 - placid, domestic, settled, simple, mother-love

7 - mystery, secrets, withdrawal from the world

8 - worldly involvement, material success, material failure

9 - mental achievement, spiritual achievement

This researcher can't help but note that the even numbers, which are also associated with the female reflect passivity, weakness, dullness and domesticity. It should be remembered that these numerological correspondences were set in place in the nineteenth century long before the modern woman as we know her today was in place. It should also be noted that this is just one system by which you can use numerology to order your dreams and we will learn of the Nordic system which reflects some different characteristics of the numbers next week.

Remember that these systems of numerology are offered to dream researchers as possible tools for use in deciphering your personal mythos. They are theories, and not hard and fast facts which can be applied for everyone (although the Pythagoreans might disagree).
