Sleeping After the Attacks on America

For many of us, sleep will not come easy after the attacks on America yesterday. Whether you were in the midst of the tragedies which took place at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon or in Pennsylvania, or simply saw the horrors unfold on the news as I did, sleep will not come easy. Dreams may be nightmares for long into the future, and the uncertainty of what will happen with our nation in the future may well cause you to have terror both in your waking and sleeping hours.

As many of you know, I am also the Managing Editor of The Living Herbal and use herbal remedies in my daily living. There are several simple to make herbal teas which can assist you in relaxation and sleep. Following are three very simple one herb teas which you can use to help aid you in your times of nervousness, sleeplessness, or if you awaken with terror from nightmares which should have been dreams.

Passionflower Tea

Steep two teaspoonfuls of the root and/or flowers in one cup of water for three to five minutes. Water should be steaming, not boiling. Drink hot or cold. Passionflower is a general calmative and will help relax you into sleep. Has a sweet taste naturally.

Valerian Tea

Valerian is very relaxing and has sedative effects. It's where modern day Valium derivatives originated. Valerian has a very pungent scent and taste, but is very effective at sedation. It can be sweetened with sugar, milk or tea and sometimes people prefer this chilled which cuts down some of the scent.

Skullcap Tea

Steep one teaspoonfull of the root in one cup of water for three to five minutes. Add sugar or honey to taste. Skullcap is an effective nerve tonic and can also help induce sleep.

Other Teas

If you find these single herb teas relaxing, you may wish to try combination teas. Three recipes can be found in the following articles through The Living Herbal:
