Well, here it is - Kristo's interpretation of my "Dream of Beetles". If you don't know who Kristo is, check out my interview Part 1 and Part 2 with Kristo. I'll start by giving you the dream in its entirety as it was written to him, and from then on the fragments will appear in italic with Kristo's interpretation in regular text. Don't forget to check back next month to see what I think of his interpretation! Keep Dreaming!
DREAM OF BEETLES I am standing beneath an oak tree, naked, my arms are straight out before me, palms up. I notice that where my thumbprints should be are beetles I start to peel one off my finger, stepping out of the tree's shade into the sun to see better. It peels up easily to reveal yet another beetle. Soon my fingertips are on fire and keep shedding beetles while I am going through a series of metamorphoses into different people as each beetle peels back to reveal another. Eventually I wake up after seeing myself as tons of different individuals in various period garb, male and female, child and adult alike. Kristo: As a usual caveat, it's important to note that my interpretation of this is strictly coming from my own associations. Your personal associations would likely put a different and deeper slant on what the significance of the images might truly be. In any case, it's always good to have differing opinions concerning a dream and its images. The diversity of standpoints will often offer something that resonates in an extraordinary way to trigger a unifying theme that might have otherwise remained hidden. DREAM I am standing beneath an oak tree, naked, my arms are straight out before me, palms up. Kristo: From a symbolic standpoint this certainly presents us with something of a ritual taking place in a sacred space. To see this as simply literal would be to envision a possibly psychotic or narcissistic episode which would get us nowhere. Oak trees are sacred to Zeus (as well as many other gods and goddesses) and the famous oak grove at Dordona was where the rustling of the leaves gave voice to whatever prophesies or divination was sought from the gods. Being naked seems to be a kind of self presentation stripped of all pretense or costume. Palms up also seem to indicate a kind of supplication as well as a form of submission to the will of whatever gods are being invoked. The symbolism of the tree is something that is nearly inexhaustible, and Jung gives a wonderful taste of this in volume 13 of the Collected Works under the title...The Philosophical Tree.
