Universal Dream Symbols: Fire and Water

Dreams are often nestled in the language of symbols, using images that have a certain familiarity to point to another level of existence, another level of reality. Symbols are found not only in dreams, but in the religion, myth and art of all cultures, and at every stage of technological advance and development. While some symbols will hold meaning in only one culture, others known as universal symbols are commonly accepted as having a transcendent and universal meaning for all peoples. Two such symbols are fire and water.

Part 1: Fire

Fire, along with earth, air and water are known as the four ancient elements, often seen as the building blocks of existence itself. Fire generates heat and light, but it can also burn, fascinating the human mind with its endless movement and its continued ability to either sustain or obliterate life. Fire can destroy, or transform and purify therefore it can represent a friend or an enemy, comfort or danger, divinity or damnation.

This duality lends fire to be an iconl that is a potent symbol for life, while on the other hand it can be seen as portraying an eternal torment, such as in the fire and brimstone perceptions of hell. However, since the first time mankind used fire, it has been a wild thing, an element of nature that is temporarily trapped and caged and used at the will of the human being.

Dreams of fire can signal transformation, purification, illumination of the spirit, love, passion, sexuality, hatred, destruction or new beginnings arising from the ash. As with any dream symbol, fire is dependent on the context of the dream and ultimately, on the dreamer. For example, a dream of the fiery rays of the sun might to one person seem warm and nurturing, but to another dreamer close to the Equator, the same dream of celestial fire could mean danger or a life threatening situation.

In many mythological legends, a hero steals fire from one or more gods. This is for the hero, a life-transforming task and accomplishment but also one that entails guilt, regret or other similar emotions for going against the will of and disrespecting the gods. In psychoanalytical terms of dream analysis, the gods could be seen as authority figures, and the act of stealing fire from them could be seen as the breaking away of past truths to attain a new level of growth, maturity and responsibility. Ultimately, the dreamer may be taking control fo the wild, untamed, energies within the self and accepting responsibility for their personal actions at a point of passage.
