Resolve to Volunteer

Do you feel like a shut-in during the winter months when the weather is harsh and there seems little to do? Instead of making yourself comfortable in that old rut, why not take on the new year by becoming a volunteer?

You may wonder, do I have the "right stuff?" Well, if you love the museum experience and want others to feel the same way, you have the makings of a great museum volunteer.

Don't think you won't qualify because you don't have formal science training. If you are willing to dedicate your time, museum staffers will be delighted to teach you what's required. Further, there are volunteer opportunities to suit nearly every area of interest and every personality type. You can work with the public or behind the scenes.

Out West

The National Atomic Museum is located on Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico and has a wide range of volunteer needs. Become an Education Presenter, an Entertainer, lead tours, maintain Exhibits, conduct research or provide the voice of Albert Einstein!

In McKinney Texas, the Heard Museum, features collections of butterflies, nature prints and seashells as well as a nature sanctuary. Volunteers contribute to Research, Earth Science, Education, Special Events, Animal Care, Graphic Design, Nature Store, Public Relations, Maintenance, Natural Science, Native Plant Garden, General Office Assistance, Wildlife Sanctuary Management.

The Discovery Center Science Museum in Fort Collins, Colorado is a hands-on institution with 90 interactive exhibits. It seeks help in Administration, Customer Service/Visitor Relations, Fundraising and Development, Education/Programming, Exhibits, Marketing and for the Board of Directors.

MidWest

If you live in Chicago, check into the Museum of Science and Industry. The 300 volunteers help with hands-on science, temporary exhibits, show collections, greet visitors, work in office administration and the gift shop.

Love the kiddies? In the Champaign, Illinois area, volunteer at the Orpheum Children's Science Museum and become can educational workshop leader, a field trip volunteer or support special events.

Milwaukee Science Museum (Wisconsin) needs staff for "Exploring Life on Earth," Butterfly Corps volunteers and docents (tour guides).

The Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul seeks School Greeters and Exhibit Explainers.

The East

Philadelphia's Franklin Institute needs extroverts to serve as Science Presenters, Service Ambassadors, HAM Radio opeators and Technical Assistants for the theaters and planetarium. Behind the scene needs include Office, Technical and Program Development Assistants.

The North Museum of Natural History and Science of Lancaster, PA invites volunteers to staff the Discovery Room, lead tour groups, work on collections or become a science demo wizard!
