Every 365 days we celebrate a new year, every ten years we celebrate a decade, and every 100 years we ring in a new century. This year we celebrate a millennium; a thousand years of life on this planet. A lot of things have happened in the past thousand years, especially in science and technology.

You may have seen changes in your lifetime, like new computer technology, or heard your parents talk about how things were like when they were your age, but can you imagine what it would be like for someone who lived in the year 1000, to be suddenly transported to our time? The changes in science and technology, over the past thousand years, would surely convince that person they were living in a time of sorcery and magic. Visit the sites below and travel back in time, to the people and events of the past millennium, to a time when science was considered "black magic," to the present time of science and technology.

A Brief History of Chemistry Did you know that the first known chemistry was considered "black magic"? Travel along the chemical eras to learn more about the origins of chemistry. A special section with short biographies of Chemists, who won the Nobel Prize.

A Century of Physics After thousands of years of intellectual struggle, physics became the science that it is today. Learn more about how these changes came about and the scientists who were at the cutting edge of physical science.

A Science Odyssey A century of science discoveries ready to be explored. Time lines, games, and activities show you the discoveries and the scientists behind them.
