August Events: Eclipse and meteor showers© Debbie St. Germain
This week in central Europe, the sky will turn dark as day becomes night. The last solar eclipse of this millennium will occur on August 11, 1999. A solar eclipse happens when the moon moves between the sun and the earth. When the sun and the moon are in a perfect line, it is a total eclipse.
Many people will be traveling to Europe to see the eclipse, but for those of you who are unable to witness the event, there is a way in which you can be a part of it. All over the Internet, sites have been set up so that others can learn about and witness the event from their computers.
Another spectacular event this month will be the Perseid meteor showers. The early hours of August 12th and 13th are the best times to catch a glimpse of the meteor streams. Scientists will be releasing a balloon to capture materials of cosmic origin before they are burned up in the atmosphere. You can read more about their experiments at their News site. My new site: Fun quizzes to help in school and more. Science, animals, geography, history, and more. If you would like to see a topic covered, mail me, and I will make up a quiz to help you learn or study for that next exam.
