Summer Science Sites

With school ending, I doubt anyone wants to spend time learning science for school this week. Most of you are probably thinking about camping, swimming, and just having fun. This week I'll be listing some fun sites I found that deal with summer activities and science.

What would summer be without Smokey the Bear? Smokey teaches you about forest safety with games, coloring pictures you can print out and take on your trip, or you can learn the bear facts. Lots of fun for younger scientists.

Would you like to learn more about bears? Visit the North American Bear Center, where you can find out everything there is to know, about all types of bears. If you've ever wondered what to do when you meet up with a bear, this site has some smart tips.

Bears aren't the only creatures you might encounter in the woods. Mosquitoes can be a real nuisance and they can carry diseases. Learn all about Mosquitoes and find tips on how to enjoy your summer, without getting bugged. (This site is provided by Off™ mosquito products. I do not endorse or guarantee any of their products.)

Miss Skeeter will show you lots of different things that can make your summer an itchy experience; from mosquitoes to poison ivy. Buzz on over and visit Lannakids to learn the facts on how to keep those itchy, scratchy nuisances out of your summer fun.

While you're hiking, you may lose your way, so learning to read a compass can be a great skill to learn. Offers additional links for reading a compass and sites about map reading.

Need something fun to do in the car or while at camp? How about learning to tie knots? A whole list of different scouting knots you can learn to tie, complete with illustrations you can print out.

Not able to get away this year? How about trying a Backyard Campout? Learn to make your own handmade lanterns, catch fireflies, learn Morse code and more. They even have a section for budding astronomers, on stargazing from your backyard.

Whether you go away for the summer or hang out in your neighborhood, there's always something fun to do and science to explore, if you just use your imagination. Explore a local pond, catch bugs and identify them with a field guide, learn to read the night sky, or explore the fun science sites listed here at Science for Kids. New sites will be added soon and fun summer science topics will be covered to get you through the hot summer days.
