Science in the News© Debbie St. Germain
Science is a method of obtaining knowledge about nature. You learn about science in classroom instruction and from books. Science is an ever-evolving and changing subject. Everyday new and exciting things are being discovered or proven. If you want to learn more about science in the world, you need to step away from the books once in awhile. You need to take a step into the exciting world of science news.
This month an occurrence that coined the saying, "Once in a Blue Moon" will happen. A Blue moon has nothing to do with the color but it used as a term to denote a second full moon that occurs within the same month. In January of this year, we saw a full moon on the 2nd and the 31st, making the full moon on the 31st, a blue moon. On average, this takes place once every two and a half years. This year we won't have to wait that long because this month, not only did we see a full moon on the second but another will occur on the 31st. Coming back down to earth, Paleontoligists discovered two complete fossils of Saber-Toothed cats. The discovery of a possible new species will definitely mean changes in your science books. Before the discovery there were two general categories. One is the Dirk-tooth (two long, narrow upper canine teeth and short legs, "built like a bear"), and the Scimitar-tooth (two shorter, broader upper canines and long legs "built like a cheetah"). The new discovery has changed that notion. This new species has two short, broad upper canines and short legs. The proposed name for this new species of Saber-toothed cats is xenosmilus. Learning about new science discoveries is a great way to further your scientific knowledge. It is also a good way to use the knowledge you have learned in school in practical applications. Don't get lost in the history of science; experience the new and wondrous science milestones as they occur. Visit the sites below and find out what is happening in the world of science. News makes great material for reports and science fair projects too. Go To Page: 1 2
