Fast Animal Facts

This week, we're going to learn some fascinating facts about animals. These are all facts that you can use to fool your friends and family. Ask them questions from these trivia (small unimportant facts that are fun to know) facts and when they can't give you the answers, amaze them with your knowledge.

Did you know:

* That a sheep, duck and a rooster were the first creatures to fly in a hot air balloon?

* That a dog was the first animal to go into space?

* That camels can spit?

* That an ostrich can run 43 miles per hour (70 kilometers per hour)?

* That pigs are the fourth most intelligent animal in the world?

* That dinosaurs didn't eat grass? There was no grass in the days of the dinosaurs.

* That a giraffe can clean its ears with its tongue?

* That dolphins can swim 37 miles per hour (60 kilometers per hour)?

* That the heart of a blue whale is the same size as a small car?

* That the scales of a crocodile are made of ceratin? That is the same substance that our finger and toe nails are made from.

* That the largest lobster ever caught weighed 42 pounds?

* That the largest octopus ever captured was in 1878? It was caught in the waters of the northern Atlantic Ocean. It weighed 4 tons.

* That a crocodile's tongue is attached to the roof of its mouth? It cannot move.

* That your cat purrs at the same speed as a diesel engine - 26 cycles per second?

* That sharks are immune to disease?

* That there are 701 breeds of purebred dogs on Earth?

* That animals are either right- or left-handed? Polar bears are always left-handed, and so is Kermit the Frog.

* That Paris, France has more dogs than people?

* That millions of trees are planted each year when squirrels plant nuts and then forget where they are?

* That New Zealand is home to 70 million sheep and only 40 million people?

* That male polar bears weigh 1400 pounds and females only weight 550 pounds, on average?

* That caribou have hollow hairs that trap air? This insulates them against the cold and heat and helps them to be buoyant (float) in water.

* That cheetahs never roar - they purr and bark?

* That bison are excellent swimmers? Their head, hump and tail never go below the surface of the water.
