If you thought writing a book was hard work and publishers are forming an orderly queue to assess, review and offer contracts then sit down take a deep breath and read on.
The truth is there are writing agents who take in on average twenty to thirty manuscripts or synopses per month, some publishers who allow direct submissions will receive over one hundred, however only two percent of the submissions will be considered as maybe having publishing potential. So how do you find a publisher or agent who will even look at your book?
First look for a publisher or agent who deals with your topic, in this case Science Fiction. There are plenty of ways to find names, addresses, e.mail addresses and telephone numbers. Use the Internet, check with other authors how they found a place for their work or invest in a copy of Writers Guide to Book Editors, Publishers, and Literary Agents 2002 - 2003. This publication has list upon list of agents, publishers and lots of great information from books to writing for television and radio, magazines, useful contacts and information from self-publishing to competitions.
My advise however is create a short list of publishers or agents who deal with your topic and are active in the country you want your work initially published. Look for their specific contact information; do not send unsolicited manuscripts, then using the contact method they specify enquire if they would be interested to review your work. Some companies will charge a reader fee but will return a detailed analysis of your work, this is only their opinion if they choose not to print your work, simply try another, then you may only get a polite rejection. If you are unlucky enough to receive a hard hitting detrimental review again try again and comfort yourself with the knowledge it has happened to the greatest of writers through out history and will happen to many more. When the good news comes and a company accepts your work be prepared for even more work, your book will be scrutinized by an editor, every word will be checked to ensure it is word perfect, the paragraphs and punctuation will be corrected before it is returned to you for your approval. Never forget it is your book and you have to agree to every recommended change. Then the manuscript will be prepared for printing, you should expect to proof read and check for errors at every stage of the publication process, which can take several months. Some publishers may ask for some percentage payment toward the publishing process which maybe returned via the commission payments, check the contract carefully, this route can be cheaper than self publishing and will certainly guarantee professional editors and advisors. Eventually you will be rewarded with a finished book.
