Write for yourself.

Some how from some-where the inspiration has come to you to write a book. I believe everyone has their own way of approaching the project, some will take educational classes, others will look for advise and guidance from authors or other writers and of cause the internet has oceans of studies and advise. The advise I offer here is the advise of experience, the subject page is science fiction but it may also I hope help other writers. The theory is the same only the subject is different. I have been a guest speaker and lecturer for several writing courses and so the following points come from the observation of many students. The biggest problem I saw was people writing or typing to fast. They were racing to finish the project, chapter or simply the line. Some typing speeds I saw were impressive, a lot faster than my two-fingered attempt. But then the students would read back and the additions, corrections and frustrations began. Slow down. Think about every word, what do you want to say? What are your characters doing, thinking? You cannot describe accurately, colourfully or descriptively unless you put yourself into the scenario you are writing about. You have to be every character, describing what they feel, think and see. The writer must be in the world they are writing about and that takes time, concentration and effort. The process may seem slower but it's an illusion, the reality is more accurate and explicit work without the frustration of having to return reread and change so much. Writing then becomes a pleasure with the satisfaction of reading back and enjoying the work like a first reader. Next write it as you would say it, don't try to use the dictionary vocabulary, keep it personal. Readers follow writer's work because they enjoy the way the language is used as much as the story they have written. The writer has to become a multiple personality, change your style to every character, some may be simple, others complicated so their way of speaking and expressing them selves must reflect the difference, some will be word perfect, others, well they are your characters you decide. Finally the reason for writing must be the message, your message. Writing your book is your way of making a statement. You can be as loud or as complicated as you want to be, the message can be subliminal or coded into the text. It is your message so don't allow your self to be influenced or type cast from the work of others, give your message. I can give an example from my own published work,Anno Domini 2001, the message can be interpreted by the readers in many ways but the subliminal must be looked for. As an example one of the main characters name is "Groad", the name can be broken down to God - Ra. Another is four characters can be identified by the description of their robes, the four horsemen of the Apocalypse.
