Science fiction is the ultimate release of the imagination, but can contain such strong messages for the reader. Some of the great authors like George Orwell with his controversial views of the future, H.G.Wells with an epic masterpeice like the Time Machine again re released on the big screen, Jules Verne with his discriptions of future technology now becoming reality and Arthur C Clarke who captivated everyone with his space epics. Modern works have also captured and bought about cult followings, Star Trek, Babylon 5, The X Files and many more. The theme is as vast as the universe and will never be exhausted, it only needs writers and authors to make the time to be creative, and be published.
How do you start to work on such a project. I can only advise, but the advise comes from experience. Some writers study language and writing skills, others read and pick up the technique of others. I just wrote the book my way. First I developed an idea, then I gave myself some simple disciplines.
1. How many chapters I wanted, to do this I broke the idea down to small catagories. The skeleton of the book.
2. Make notes of what you want each chapter to contain, if new characters were to be introduced make a note of their names, also place names.
3. Highlight anything which is mentioned early in the book so that it is not missed later, readers are very critical and if a link is introduced they will be looking for the completion.
4. Learn to live with frustration. The time you want to write is never the right time for everyone else in your life, carry a small pad and pen and make notes as ideas come to you, it helps over come the infamous block when life finally allows you the time write.
5. Write how you would would tell the story to a group of people. Express your self through the characters, be each and everyone, describe the surroundings and happenings how you see it in your head, don't just write it, live it, feel it, describe it.
6. All work has a message, make sure you are clear with what you want to say, then say it in a way the reader is allowed to analyse and comment. The more people talk about your work, the more people will read it.
The real beauty of Science Fiction is it can be set in the past, the present or the future. There are no restraints, it can be colourful, romantic, action packed, simple or technological. The writer should be able to enjoy the experience of allowing their imagination to stimulate and free their own mind taking them into another world, then take the reader into that world.
