Books by Fans for Fans...is part two of my series on Sci-Fi TV books. In this article I'll take a look at a book edited by Nikki Stafford, the author of "Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor: Warrior Stars of Xena," with true fan stories written for fans.
"How Xena Changed Our Lives: True Stories By Fans For Fans" - I was first drawn to this book through my love of the series "Xena: Warrior Princess" and my love of books of any kind. The premise intrigued me as much as the reason for the book. In the introduction Nikki Stafford tells the readers that the idea for the book came to her at the "Xena" convention in May of 2001 while talking with friends about another book she was doing, "Trekkers: True Stories By Fans For Fans," and how one suggested a similar book as a way for fans "to say goodbye to Xena." However, it wasn't until Stafford had watched the heart-wrenching series finale of "Xena" that the idea really took flight and a note was sent out among fans from Stafford asking for stories about "How "Xena: Warrior Princess" changed people's lives?" Eliciting a "ton" of replies. Another great thing about this book is that a 'portion of all of the proceeds' of the book go to Sword and Staff, a charity organization run by "Xena: Warrior Princess" fans. Sword and Staff will give the money raised by the sale of "How Xena Changed Our Lives: True Stories By Fans For Fans" to the Starship Foundation, a charity supported by "Xena: Warrior Princess" star Lucy Lawless. Through out the book there are touching, heart felt accounts of fans who met the stars of "Xena", of fans who met their partners through their mutual love of "Xena" and heart rending tales of those who found strength and inspiration to battle deadly illnesses from the series and characters that they had come to love so much. There is also an entire section dedicated to the memory of Kevin Smith, the man who played the God of War, Ares on "Xena: Warrior Princess." In the memorial section for Kevin Smith are stories written by the fans saying goodbye to the very talented actor. Go To Page: 1 2
