In this article I would like to give you my thoughts on a rumor that has been circulating the Internet for the past few weeks. It's a rumor that I don=t give to much credence to.
As a fan of the weekly series, I hope that the "Powers That Be" recognize the moneymaker that they have in "Stargate SG-1" and don=t cancel the popular series. However, that's just my humble opinion. What are the deciding factors in such a cancellation? Well, there are several including money, ratings and marketability. To my way of thinking "Stargate SG-1" has a potential in all of the aforementioned categories. Especially money and marketability. When I last checked the ratings race, "Stargate SG-1" was in the top ten ratings list. Another thing that the popular series has going for it is it's huge fan base. On the internet, "Stargate SG-1," "Xena: Warrior Princess," "Star Trek" (all five series) and "Babylon 5" are tied for the most fan related websites in Science Fiction Television. "Stargate SG-1" also has the distinction of having several "Stargate SG-1" stylized conventions around the world each year. Those conventions include the most famous of all the "Stargate SG-1" conventions "Gate Con." My theory about a possible cancellation is that the network wouldn't cancel their biggest money maker, unless the cost of producing the series is too high or the rating have dropped significantly, like what happened with "Xena: Warrior Princess." "Xena: Warrior Princess" was cancelled because the costs of production were too high (according to the network, which was producing several other series at the time) and the ratings had dropped at the end of the fifth season and into the sixth season. So something had to go, and what went was the extremely popular Sci-Fi/Fantasy series "Xena: Warrior Princess," much to the dislike of "Xena: Warrior Princess" fans world wide. The "Xena: Warrior Princess" cancellation felicitated a huge snail mail, fax and email campaign to try and save the series. The attempt failed and the show ended at the end of it's sixth season. However, in this case...rumor is running rampant. The network has not said one way or the other what they are going to do, yet. As I said, I think it's highly unlikely that the Sci-Fi Channel will cancel a series that has brought them the number of viewers that "Stargate SG-1" has. Go To Page: 1 2
