Sci-Fi TV Shows - "Lost Touch?" or "Still in Touch?"

Times change everything, including Sci-Fi TV programs. Many Sci-Fi television programs have gotten better with age and some have gotten worse. In fact some of the worst cases have been that the writers, put simply, lost interest, ran out of ideas or simply lost "touch" with the characters they worked with.

I sat down recently and had a mini TV festival with some old favourites of mine. While I was watching a couple of the shows I used to watch way back when...I wondered, "Just how many shows have lost "touch" and how many are still "in touch?"

In this article I'll take a look at some of the more popular shows. Some of which have been favourites of mine for years.

"The X-Files" - Many fans thought that toward the end of the series Chris Carter had lost touch. However, he had his own idea of how he saw the series and had it mapped out. Carter knew the direction he wanted the characters to go and nothing could change it.

In that way he hasn't "lost touch" with characters or the storylines, but in the minds of the fans...he lost "touch" when Mulder (played by David Duchovny) left the series for better things. Personally, I don't think he "lost touch" at all, to my mind he knew the point where he wanted his characters to be at in the show, which ran for nine years, was then flung a curve ball (with Duchovny leaving the series) and did the best he could with what he was left.

And it worked out well for Chris Carter and the "X-Files." So that to me is a "good thing." The case of the "X-Files" is a clear example of the old adage..."If life hands you a lemon...you go out and get some more. Then you come back home and make all those lemons into the best tasting 'lemonade' you can!"

Some times it works. Some times it doesn't.

"Xena: Warrior Princess" - As with the "X-Files" Robert Tapert and company knew where they wanted the characters to be and didn't let much stand in his way to get there. When "Xena: Warrior Princess" ended last year, many fans thought Tapert and company had lost touch with the characters the season before.

The fans believed that the Powers That Be forgot about the bond, which held Xena (Lucy Lawless) and Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor) together and made the show the cult hit that it was, first when they created the infamous "rift" between the characters after the equally infamous "Dahok" incident, then during the fifth season and finally at the end of the series' sixth and final season. But...did he? Or was he trying to take what lie before him and run with it?
