The Future of Star Trek

Will the "Star Trek" legacy continue to shine? That's one of the question that's been running through my mind for a while now.

So many fans have become disenchanted with the direction the "Powers That Be" have taken the franchise in the last few years, that some critics labelled "Enterprise" the 'last best hope for the future of the "Star Trek" universe.'

I, however, think that the future of "Star Trek" hinges more on the quality of it's writing than anything else. Well...except the creative forces behind any new show or film for the "Star Trek" universe being able to maintain continuity with the rest of the shows and films.

Will the upcoming film "Star Trek: Nemesis" be the final "Star Trek" film? In the grand scheme of things, no. Why? You may be asking. Put simply, as long as there are still "Trekkies" and "Trekkers" out there in the world and writers willing to write the scripts there will be more "Star Trek" movies. Maybe not the kind that we've been used to up until now, but there will most likely be "Star Trek" films of some sort around.

As for the question "Will the upcoming film "Star Trek: Nemesis " be the final "Star Trek" film with the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" cast?" Probably, what with a few of the 'key' actors from the popular series being tired of playing their characters. Add to that the lack of interesting storylines for the main cast and the fact that a good portion of the stories have been told in some form or another.

There was a suggestion at one point that after "Star Trek: Nemesis" there should be a film that involved the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Star Trek: Voyager" crews. That was proved to be a 'false' but hopeful 'rumour.' I, personally, don't see that happening but then again...stranger things can and have happened.

As for "Enterprise?" Well...it, like it's theme song, grows on you. The series is far more entertaining than I had originally thought that it would be. I am impressed with the way that it loosely 'follows' the "Star Trek" timeline, while at the same time is extremely original and completely different to any "Star Trek" series we have seen before. The cast of "Enterprise" truly goes where 'no man has gone before.'

But is it enough to save the dwindling "Star Trek" phenomenon that was started almost 36 years ago by the late great Gene Roddenberry.
