Wolf Lake

“Wolf Lake” is a Sci-Fi drama about one man’s search for his missing fiancée and to find out the truth about a town where most of it’s prominent citizens are ‘shape-shifters’ who can at will transform into wolves. Amid the mysterious deeds of the town lies an intense power struggle for the leadership of the ‘wolf pack’.

The series stars Lou Diamond Phillips as John Kanin, Mia Kirshner, Tim Matheson as Sheriff Matthew Donner, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Sophia Donner, Bruce McGill as Willard Cates, Paul Wasilewski as Luke Cates, Sharon Lawrence as Vivian Cates, Scott Bairstow as Tyler Creed, and Graham Greene as Sherman Blackstone.

When his search for his fiancée leads him to her hometown “Wolf Lake”, Seattle Cop John Kanin discovers that nothing about the town or it’s residences are what they appear to be. Wanting to find out what happened to Ruby and what’s really going on in the town he teams up with the local Sheriff Matthew Donner.

Matters are complicated further by the fact the Sheriff’s daughter Sophia is dating Luke, the son of the town’s current ‘Alpha’ male and female Willard and Vivian Cates and the brother of Kanin’s fiancée Ruby, and the Sheriff’s own struggle with his ‘shape-shifting’ identity.

While the series’ premise and writing are sound, on a scale of 1-10, I’d give it an 8. It may not be my favourite series, but it has a very interesting premise and I’m a sucker for anything with wolves. However, against it’s popular competition, NBC’s Law and Order and ABC’s NYPD Blue, it may not be able to be come the hit that it could be if it had been placed in a different line-up.

“Wolf Lake” made it’s debut on September 26th to adequate ratings and lukewarm reviews. It airs Wednesday night on CBS.
