Enterprise - A New Hope?

UPN's new series, Enterprise is an interesting look at the future, or past, of one of the biggest fandoms of the Entertainment world...Star Trek. Set before the original series, some 35 years after Zephram Cochran’s "First Contact" with the Vulcans (as seen in the Star Trek film "First Contact"), Enterprise tells the tale of the first crew of a starship called "Enterprise".

The series stars Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer, Jolene Blalock as Sub-Commander T'Pol, Dominic Keating as Lt. Malcolm Reed, Linda Park as Ensign Hoshi Sato, Anthony Montgomery as Ensign Travis Mayweather, John Billingsley as Dr. Phlox and Connor Trinneer as Chief Engineer Charles Tucker III.

Earlier this year when I heard the news that the 'powers that be' were casting Bakula as Archer, I'll admit that I was somewhat disappointed and dismayed. I even stated that I might not like the series with Bakula as the Captain. While I liked Bakula's former series "Quantum Leap" when it was on the first time, I was less than enthusiastic about it's star.

However, I have come to realize that in some cases an actor is only as good as the scripts he or she is given and since the airing of the series premiere, a 2 hour episode entitled "Broken Bow", my opinions of the new Star Trek series have changed somewhat. I was impressed with some things about Enterprise, but less than impressed with others.

Being a life long Trek fan, I was impressed with the way that the Enterprise production team dealt with technology issues. The actors looked less than comfortable in their roles. However that should change as the series moves on. One of the things I was less than impressed with was that at times the dialogue seemed stilted, stiff and boorish. The action sequences were filled with excitement, fireworks and drama. Other scenes, however, were confusing and left me wondering what was going on, until I watched it a second time round.

Some of the people I've talked to who have seen Enterprise have not liked it, going so far as to say that it was horrible. I on the other hand, who once said that it would be horrible with Bakula as the Captain, was pleasantly surprised. I went into the premiere thinking that I would hate it and came out as fan.

I wasn't alone in liking the start of Enterprise either. According to several sources, Enterprise was well received among TV critics including The New York Times' Ron Wertheimer, The New York Daily's David Bianculli, Variety's Laura Fries and The Hollywood Reporter's Michael R. Farkash.
