Toronto Trek Part OneFor those not familiar with Toronto Trek, it is one of Canada's largest annual fan-run mass media Sci-Fi/Fantasy conventions. Held every year in Toronto, Ontario Canada, it hosts some of the finest Sci-Fi/Fantasy authors, actors and other celebrity guests and fans. Held at Toronto's Regal Constellation Hotel, the convention is a spectacular collection of artistic talent and fan interaction. The activities are as diverse as the genres and shows that Toronto Trek represents. Some of this year's activities were the annual Masquerade, a First Wave mini-con, the Writer's Workshop, a discussion on the Hubble Space Telescope, a panel on British SFTV: The Best!, several Andromeda panels including Andromeda: The Captain, a panel on whether The Book is Better?, several panels on Vampires including Vampires in Media. Other panels included Hercules and Xena, Learning to Write (a writer's discussion panel), several Star Trek: Voyager panels including Captain Janeway: A Performance Review and several panels on costuming including the ever popular Prosthetics for Costuming. There were also chances to get autographs and pictures with the stars. This year's guest list included Xena and Hercules' Robert Trebor (Salmoneus), Babylon 5's Andreas Katsulas (G'Kar), Star Trek: DS9's Armin Shimerman (Quark), Babylon 5's Tim Choate (Zathras), Earth: Final Conflict's Michelle Nolden (T’Than ) and Leni Parker (Da'an). Other guests included Canadian Sci-Fi artist Larry Stewart (who acted as the MC), well known FanFic writer NovaD (aka Deborah L. Warner of the Privateers), the Hubble Telescope's Inge Heyer and noted Canadian Sci-Fi/Fantasy authors James Alan Gardner, Tanya Huff, Fiona Patton and Julie E. Czerneda. There were several fan clubs meeting there as well, one of those was the well known Klingon fan club of Canada - KAG. As with all conventions, Toronto Trek gives fans a lot of things to choose from over the course of one brief weekend, but it never fails to deliver what it promises. All in all a good (but tiring :) ) weekend. In the next article I'll delve into some of the actors' talks I went to. Trivia Question: What character did Star Trek: DS9's Armin Shimerman portray on Beauty and the Beast? Last week's question and answer: Question: What was the name of Khan's ship in "Space Seed"?
