Star Trek: Voyager - Endgame

Star Trek: Voyager's swan song had moments of suspense, excitement, joy, humour and sadness. All in all the episode, keeping on par with other finales of the year, was a good one, especially with regard to the special effects and storyline. In other ways…it didn't live up to its hype, although a good portion of shows today rarely do.

The episode begins 33 years after the start of the series. It opens with a shot of cheering crowds, fireworks and Voyager flying over the Golden Gate Bridge in a triumphant return 23 years after being lost in the Delta Quadrant. As the scene continues, we hear a voice announcing that it's the tenth anniversary of Voyager's return, Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), now an Admiral, orders the computer to turn off the vid and strides to the window, where we catch a shadowy glimpse of an older Janeway.

From there, viewers are treated to a Voyager "family" reunion, but with a few missing crewmembers and some surprises. A couple of the surprises are that Tom (Robert Duncan McNeill) writes holo-novels; the Doctor (Robert Picardo) is married and after 33 years has chosen a name..."Joe"; and Harry (Garrett Wang) is a Captain. Most notably missing were Seven (Jeri Ryan), Chakotay (Robert Beltran), Tuvok (Tim Russ) and of course Neelix (Ethan Phillips).

As the episode progressed viewers were treated to a 'possible' fate for Tuvok, Chakotay and Seven. Both Seven and Chakotay are dead and Tuvok is in the Starfleet Medical Hospital suffering from a degenerative neurological disease. In an attempt to get the crew home earlier and all in one piece, Admiral Janeway sets out on a mission, back through time, to convince her younger self to take a route she had previously overlooked because it had been filled with Borg.

The mission leads to a confrontation with the Borg Queen and what may be the Federation's final showdown with one of their deadliest enemies. It's a confrontation that the younger Janeway would sooner avoid, which would add more years to the crew's journey home. For the younger Janeway, it's a choice between getting her crew home earlier and saving billions of innocent lives.

There are some humorous scenes between B'Elanna (Roxann Dawson) and Tom as the birth of their daughter draws closer, some romantic and somewhat sweet scenes between Chakotay and Seven as they explore a budding relationship.

It also left some unanswered questions, but did answer the big question of Voyager's final season. Will Voyager make it home?" For the sake of those who haven't seen the episode yet, I won't reveal the final answer to the question. But those who wish to be 'spoiled' can email me for the answer.
