The end of Star Trek: Voyager

© Tanya M. Blakeley

In everything there is a beginning and an end, including the fourth series in Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek legacy, Star Trek: Voyager.

Voyager is the story of an intrepid starship, it's Captain, her crew - a band of rebellious disenchanted souls - and how they are all transported by some strange array to the far off Delta Quadrant. In the Delta Quadrant, the two sides are faced with a do-or-die, join forces or perish situation. With a description like that, this series sounded more like the beginning of the next blockbuster Sci-Fi film than what Star Trek fans had come to expect from a series with Star Trek in the name.

In the begining the show's main cast consisted of Kate Mulgrew (Janeway), Robert Beltran (Chakotay), Tim Russ (Tuvok), Ethan Phillips (Neelix), Robert Duncan McNeill (Paris), Roxann Dawson (B'Elanna), Robert Picardo (The Doctor), Garrett Wang (Harry) and Jennifer Lien (Kes). Then, at the start of the fourth season, Jennifer Lien left the show and presented an empty space on the roster.

To fill the empty spot, Jeri Ryan - who at the time was best know to Sci-Fi fans as Juliet on Dark Skies - was brought in as the new character, Seven of Nine aka Annika Hansen. Although her character brought new elements to the show, a television series is only as good as it's writing.

To many a Star Trek fan, Voyager's writing over the past couple of seasons hasn't lived up to the quality expected of a Star Trek series. Indeed, some of the recent episodes have been 'less than stellar'...but then again in this past television season there have been many shows that have had 'hits and misses' with some episodes.

Having said that, there have been just as many good, if not great, episodes of Voyager. A few good episodes that come to mind are:

From the Fourth Season - "Scorpion - Part II", "The Year of Hell - Parts I & II", "The Killing Game - Parts I & II", and "One".

From the Fifth Season - "Timeless", "Dark Frontier - Parts I & II", and "Equinox - Part I".

From the Sixth Season - "Equinox - Part II", "Memorial", "The Haunting of Deck Twelve", and "Unimatrix Zero - Part I".

From the Seventh Season - "Unimatrix Zero - Part II", "Flesh and Blood - Parts I & II", "Q2", and from what I've seen, "Endgame".

Voyager Main Character Bios

Captain Kathryn Janeway (portrayed by Kate Mulgrew) - Captain Janeway is a woman who isn't afraid to take risks. She is a tough-as-nails Captain with a knack for diplomacy. She is also know for her her Scientific and Engineering ablities and taking a "hands on" approach when the two specialties come into question. Over the past seven years, Janeway's character has become a favorite of fans around the world.
