Sheena, Queen of the Jungle

On Monday November 6th, I got a chance to catch the premiere episode "Sheena" of a new series entitled, oddly enough, Sheena. It was on Space: The Imagination Station here in Canada. I thought to myself, "Here's an interesting show, nothing else on so why not?" Why not indeed. As the hour went on I found myself fascinated and captivated by not only the show and it's fabulous special effects but also it's stellar writing.

Sheena was created and is executive produced by Douglas Schwartz and Steven L. Sears, two men well known in the Television industry. Schwartz's best known series is perhaps the hit syndicated series that he and Michael Berk and Greg Bonnan created, "Baywatch". Sears on the other hand is well known to Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV fans for his work both as an executive producer and writer on the hit series Xena: Warrior Princess. The series stars "Baywatch"'s Gena Lee Nolin as Sheena, John Allen Nelson as Matt Cutter, Margo Moorer as Kali and Kevin Quigley as Mendelsohn.

Sheena is the protector of a jungle in Africa and a legend, if you will, to the people living there. Brought to by the jungle by tragedy, the orphaned Sheena was taken in and raised by a woman named Kali, who is the last surviving member of the Kaya tribe. The Kaya tribe members appearently knew mystical and secret powers that allowed them to morph into different shapes and animals, which they shared with the young Sheena.

In the first episode, Cutter and Sheena meet for the first time. He leads a group of 'fortune hunters' who are searching for diamonds and gold. Sheena sends a spear or arrow at the plane and the plane crashes. A little while later Cutter is being chased by Norliss' men and Sheena, in the form of a Gorilla, saves Cutter from death both at the hands of Norliss' men and by the quicksand he's fallen into.

Cutter starts to wake up, but his vision is a little fuzzy. He watches confused as, through his fuzzy vision, he sees the Gorilla turn into a woman who disappears only to knock him out a moment later. She drags him to Kali's village and Kali asks her if he saw her change to which Sheena answers, "He might have." The shamaness recognizes Cutter and tells Sheena that he brings tourists to the jungle looking for the legendary creature called the 'Darak'na'.
