Dark Angel is a dark futuristic series set in the year 2019. It stars Jessica Alba, of "Never Been Kissed" fame, as a genetically enhanced human proto-type named Max Guevara, Michael Weatherly as the cyberjournalist Logan Cale, Alimi Ballard as Max's fellow courier Herbal Thought, Valarie Rae Miller as Max's fellow courier Original Cindy, Richard Gunn as another of Max's fellow couriers Sketchy, J.C. MacKenzie as Max's boss Normal, Jennifer Blanc as Max's roomate Kendra and John Savage as Lydecker.
In the years since her escape the United States has become a third world contry thanks to the Pulse, an electromagnetic shockwave that was unleased in 2009 by nuclear terrorists. Max herself has become a courier and is always looking over her shoulder trying to elude capture. Along the way she meets an idealistic cyber journalist named Logan Cale or "Eyes Only", who tries to fight the rising corruption and repression. He attempts to get her to join him in his fight and offers to help her find her "siblings" who were scattered during the aftermath of the escape. She refuses his offer and goes her own way. Later she reluctantly joins forces with him to save one of his sources' daughter who has been kidnaped by a ruthless and powerful man. And so begins the story. I found that the premiere episode was slow to get started and a little hard to follow. It kept me confused for the first hour, wondering what was going on and I wasn't the only one...at least not in my house. At times the episode was dark (as emotionally dark), dismal and depressing. The plot/story line reminds me a little of Universal Soldier, albeit a younger version of the story. In Dark Angel the children were genetically enhaced to be the ultimate warriors and in Universal Soldier the dead soldiers were revived and genetically enhanced to be the ultimate killers.
