Star Trek Proverbs

© Tanya M. Blakeley

Over the years as I've watched the various Star Trek movies and series, I've come across several ancient and non-ancient proverbs that have been given new life within the scripts of the Star Trek Legacy.

I've gathered a few of my favourite proberbs from the Star Trek Universe in this article. Starting with one of my favourite "Klingon" proverbs:

- Revenge is a dish best served cold. - Spoken by Khan in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Followed by another great Klingon proverb:

- Four thousand throats may be cut in one night by a running man.

- Spoken by the great Klingon Warrior Kang in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's episode Blood Oath

On to a wise piece of advice from the teachings of Sun Tzu told in the Art of War:

- He will Triumph who knows when to fight and when not to fight.

- Spoken by the Guardian in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode The Last Outpost

Another great Klingon proverb:

- Today is a good day to die.

- From various episodes of Star Trek: TNG, Star Trek: DS9 and Star Trek: Voyager

And finally my all-time favourite Star Trek proverb... from the movie Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, the great "Vulcan" proverb:

- Only Nixon can go to China!

- Spoken by Captain Spock

Trivia Question and last week's answer:

Question:

To whom did Spock say the above proverb in the Undiscovered Country?

Answer:

Who played Commander William Decker in Star Trek: The Motion Picture?

Decker was played by Stephen Collins.
