Over the past few years, a growing number of Sci-Fi fans have seen subtext in their favourite shows. One such show is Xena: Warrior Princess. The fans who want to can see the subtext between 'soulmates' Xena (played by Lucy Lawless) and Gabrielle (played by Renee O'Connor). This has led many to ask the question, "Are they lovers or aren't they?", since the hit series began.
Talia was a PSI Corps representative. Ivanova's mother was a telepath who refused to join the Psi Corps and chose to take 'sleepers'. She later took her own life because of the drugs. Therefore, the relationship between Talia and Ivanova was one of love/hate, apparently culminating in the episode "Divided Loyalties", the night before Talia was revealed to be a PSI Corps plant. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine also tackled the issue of lesbian relationships with the kiss between Jadzia Dax (played by Terry Farrell) and Dr. Lenara Kahn (played by Susanna Thompson). It happened in the episode "Rejoined" in which the wife of one of Dax's former hosts (Torias) journeys to DS9 and Dax must decide whether to go against Trill laws. In the end, Lenara leaves the station rather than breaking the laws. More recently, another show brought about the subtext or in this case maintext issue. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is exploring a relationship between Willow (played by Alyson Hannigan) and Tara (played by Amber Benson). Will more shows start putting in subtext? Will the shows that show it end up like the series Ellen or will the subtext only be continued on in Fan Fiction? Only the future knows what will happen. Personally, if a show has a good storyline, plot and good writers I'll watch it regardless of whether it has a subtextual relationship or not. Many good shows have been daring and tackled forbidden subjects like Star Trek did with the racial barrier. So, it comes as no surprise to me that sci-fi shows are tackling the issue of subtext and the possibilities of gay and lesbian characters. Until next week, Battle On!!!
