Fan Fiction - Keeping the Faith

© Tanya M. Blakeley

The Networks have cancelled your favourite Sci-Fi show before they can end the series properly, and your tired of wondering what the future held for your favourite characters. What do you do? For some the answer is simple, 'create an Role Playing Game (or RPG)' to play with friends, where you get to be part of the action, or 'write the perfect ending yourself', which comes in the form of fan fiction.

Many times people aren't happy with the endings of their favourite shows, like say 'Space Above and Beyond' which ended with a 'cliff-hanger', leaving most of it's fans wondering "what if?" So, they decided to create that 'perfect' ending, in which everyone comes back safe and sound. I have found that a great example of the 'Fan- Fiction' stories available on the net can be found at http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Dimensio... the SAAB Fan-Fiction Flight Deck, there are also a large variety of Babylon 5 Fan-fiction sites around one of the best being Marcus Cole and the Knights of the Round Station at http://www.geocites.com/Area51/Dunes/406... While there are many more Fan-Fiction sites available these are just a small sample of the best of them.

There are also a variety of RPG sites on the net. The idea behind them is simple, to 'put yourself in the action' of your favourite sci-fi tv show's universe. Some are a variation of the old Dungeons and Dragons RPG that many of us played when we were younger. I remember playing a version D & D with my cousin and (yes) my mother when I was younger. I stopped playing D & D a while ago, but, I still have a fondness for RPGs. Now, the RPGs are played by email or over the internet.

One such RPG is the USS Sovereign an on-line RPG which can be found at http://www.southern-ohio.com/usssovereig... This play-by-email RPG is based on the Star Trek: The Next Generation Universe, where you become a part of the crew of the USS Sovereign. Another example of the RPGs available on the net is the Starfleet Command International RPG Organization at http://www.sfcommand.com/ .

If you like RPGs and Fan-Fic, the above sites are my top recommendations, but here are a few more you might want to check out:
