Space 1999 is a classic 1970s Sci-Fi show. Space 1999 starred Martin Landau, Barbara Bain, Barry Morse, Catherine Schell, Nick Tate, Tony Anholt, Zienia Merton, Clifton Jones and Prentis Hancock. Space 1999 centers around the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha, who after a Nuclear explosion sends them and the entire Moon soaring out of the known galaxy, experience an incredible and wondrous journey of exploration.
Moonbase Alpha's Commander is John Koenig (played by Landau), a strong-willed, dedicated commander, who wants to keep everyone under his command alive. The Base's Doctor is Helena Russell (played by Bain). She battles unknown illnesses and viruses full-time. The philosopher Scientist is Victor Bergman (played by Morse). Maya (played by Schell) is a shape-shifter who the crew takes aboard after the destruction of her home planet. Alan Carter (played by Tate) is the pilot who has the ability to get the crew to safety more often than not. Tony Verdeschi (played by Anholt) is the security officer. Sandra Benes (played by Merton) is an officer who copes with her nightmares quietly. David Kano (played by Jones) is the computer officer. Last but not least, is the first officer Paul Morrow (played by Hancock). The inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha are constantly faced with new and interesting alien races, new and unusual phenomenon and new problems to deal with. As each new day arrives, they must begin their struggle to survive all over again. Each day also brings more and more damage, not only the physical damage but also a tremendous amount of emotional damage. With the passage of time they discover that there can be no easy answers to their endless questions. The possible no-win senerio becomes common place, as does their desire to survive. Together the surviving crew of Moonbase Alpha forge a strong bond as they strive to find a habitable planet where they can live out their lives in peace. This show lends credence to two thoughts, one is that "Old things are new again," and two "the Old classics never die, they just get better with age." If you get a chance, check this show out. You might be surprised by what you see. Editor's Note: If you have a favorite show, episode, or character and would like to see articles on them. Please ask.
