According to Dr. Torrey 40% of the population with schizophrenia and bipolar are not receiving any
treatment. One third of the homeless wander the streets with untreated schizophrenia and have no
awareness of it. An equal number are rotting in jail. Murders and suicides by people with untreated
schizophrenia happen far too often. It is a tremendous loss and cost to society, families, and especially the
people who have schizophrenia. Governments unfortunately, are currently focusing resources on the very disabled downstream patients, not realizing that degree of deterioration can be prevented by focusing resources on upstream patients at the beginning of their schizophrenia.
