  • If you are playing an A (or, really, any note from A to C), adding keys on your right hand (especially the first three together) can yield a slight "Wah" sound. You can simulate the sound of a trumpet (or trombone) moving a hat or plunger over their bell. This one is a favorite of mine because it doesn't distort the tone much, but when transitioned from a regular A, this hybrid sounds unique.

Of course there are an infinite number of ways to alter the pitch. You could use a saxophone mute, or stick a tennis ball in your bell. Try playing real close you your music, or in a corner facing the wall. Anything you can think of that is safe for you, your audience, your band, and your instrument is a good thing. Music is creative and therefore needs to always find new avenues of expression. Let it grow!
