The language of wellness has taken many forms: mind/body/spirit, self-care, healthy lifestyle, behavior change, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), health education, and health promotion. Some of this language is interchangeable with wellness, while other terms may refer to strategies, delivery models, techniques, etc. Central to all are goals to help each individual reach and maintain optimum health and wellbeing.
You may want to start your investigation of wellness by examining international and national initiatives and organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), and Healthy People 2010, to understand the global nature of health and how that fits with your personal wellness. Next, read the NWI's website to get a clear understanding of what is meant by wellness. And, don't forget to search Suite101's directory or a search engine for wellness, six dimensions, etc. Try looking into James Prochaska's behavior change theory and stages. It is sometimes helpful to understand why changing something that seems simple and easy is so hard. Videos, books, and self-help manuals, in addition to numerous websites abound with information that will prepare you to explore wellness. There are also general online wellness tests if you want to check your wellness in the six dimensions. We will begin next month's article with the P of my POSIES acronym, physical wellbeing.
