Of course, to catch its brief appearance, you have to look - and you have to look a lot. I always stop what I'm doing if I'm at the ocean, especially those times when I'm on a slight rise, or bluff, above the horizon. I stand stock-still and observe - and try not to blink.

You'll never see the flash if you don't make the effort to look, every chance you get. Let me know when you see one!

Hot Flashes

Most people catch that green spot over the ocean, but I've also seen it as the sun set across a mountain range, in the desert, and once as it sunk into a thick cloud layer.

Some have reported catching the flash at sunrise, but this is extremely rare, seeing as how you

  1. need to know precisely WHERE the sun will be rising and

  2. precisely WHEN, since you would have to look for the flash before you see the sun's disk itself.

It is possible to see green flashes from the setting Moon and Venus, or bright stars like Sirius, but it's harder to know when these are going to set. It's worth keeping an open mind and eye for the chance to catch this kind of flash.

If You Just Hate to Flash and Run

San Diegans love being flashed - in fact, there's a bar and grill right on Pacific Beach dedicated to documenting and sharing knowledge about the phenomena itself - called, appropriately, The Green Flash.

This is one of my favorite beach-side restaurants. The food is decent and not too expensive, the views are wonderful and the ambience is relaxed. I like the deep cherry wood tones and the boardwalk-side patio. Good for people watching and sunset viewing.

The best place I know to catch the "green flash" is at its namesake, The Green Flash Restaurant. Located at the end of Thomas Street, not too far from the lifeguard station, the restaurant is as close as possible to the sandy beach. The restaurant is a fixture on the local scene. It has been here since 1965, when Armando opened a snack bar at the location. It grew and expanded over the years. In 1990, Alan, Armando's son, changed the name to "The Green Flash."
