Each park museum also offers free admission one Tuesday per month. These are called Free Tuesdays . Check in with the Visitors Center (see below) to find out which museums are free on your particular Tuesday.

Plan Rest Breaks

Quiet areas of the park are just the thing for respite from the hustle, bustle and crowds along the Promenade. I like walking along the magnificent Palm Canyon, or sitting in the Moorish Alcazar Garden, when I want to get away for a bit.

Other secluded spots are the Bird Park, the Balboa Park Club Lawn Area, the old Bridal Trail, Zoro Garden, Rose Garden, Desert Garden and the Sunken Garden behind the Museum of Man.

In the Zoo, steal a breather by riding the quiet tram ride. Few people take the time to enjoy this ten-minute oppportunity for seated solitude, high, high above the screeching baboons, stomping elephants and roaring tigers.

Don't Try To Do It All

I recommend picking one museum per day, and enjoying the other activities as they come.

Wander into the botanical garden (free), have a picnic by the Lily Pond, splash in the fountains and watch the roaming clowns, jugglers and other free entertainers. Don't try to see too much, and keep in mind that taking in the Zoo is an entire day's worth of action in itself.
