Bring a water bottle

Diego's tap water is notoriously nasty. While it's safe to drink, the taste leaves something to be desired after crossing the desert in pipelines from the Colorado River. And it's easy to get dehydrated in SD's dry, sunny climate. Taking along at least a quart of bottled water, per person, will prevent dehydration headaches and help you enjoy your day.

Wear sturdy shoes

Chances are, you'll be parking far from the main section of the park. While parking is free, spots close-in are at a premium. If you can't arrive before 9AM, give up in the prime spots and park wherever you can. Plan on getting a little walking in while you browse the sights, check out the zoo, or wander the many gardens.

Take Snacks

You can buy ice cream sandwiches or hot dogs from promendade vendors on busy days, or get a table at El Prado for lunch or dinner. Several museums have nice cafes as well. But it doesn't hurt to bring a baggie with pretzels, a few apples, and plenty of granola bars. Stomach rumblings will keep you from enjoying the museums, concerts and sidewalk entertainment. It's best to bring a little something to tide you over. Put it all in a backpack, with your bottles water, juice - or even a sumptious picnic spread - far more comfortable than lugging around a big purse on your shoulder.

NOTE: Packing snacks is an especially important tactic for children, who would otherwise yank you out of the park just to get something to eat.

Have a Jacket

Sure, San Diego maintains idyllic weather year-round, but it can get chilly in the evening. It doesn't hurt to make sure everyone wraps a windproof jacket or fleece around their waist, so you don't have to go running to the car (which could be parked pretty far away, after all) after the sun starts to dip.

Get Yourself a Map

The Visitors Center, in the House of Hospitality, offers a highly detailed park map for $2, and Pamela Crooks' Discover Balboa Park , a well-written park guidebook, for $12. Either option is suitable for planning your day and finding your way.

Discounts and Freebies

Discounted admissions to Balboa Park's major cultural attractions are available through the Balboa Park Passport. The $30 Passport, valid for one week, represents a $70 value and allows entry to 12 park museums and the Japanese Friendship Garden.
