Top Attractions in San Diego

San Diego is a great place to read about when you're stuck in the dreary tail end of winter, elsewhere in the US.

Some people are asking where some good places to go on a visit to San Diego. Most people know about Seaport Village and check out the Port, so that's a good start. So's seeing the Chargers in a winning game!

More great places to see for your next visit to San Diego:

  • Of course, Balboa Park is a must-see. The link provided goes to my article on Balboa Park.

  • The Embarcadero and Star of India along the SD waterfront. Eat at Anthony's Fish Grotto, right on a dock on harbor, overlooking the bay.

  • Harbor Island is also a lovely park-like area, and I recommend a bite or drink at Tom Ham's Lighthouse at sunset.

  • Cabrillo National Monument is just magnificent. Outstanding views in all directions, on the highest point on the bay. There's a nice mueum there, some lovely tidepools (check out my tidepool article from last month for more on Cabrillo's tidepools), and lots of seals and whale-watching.

  • Sea World, of course, is world-renowned and always worth a trip, if you're into sea mammals and cool marine life. The Shark Encounter, and the Penguin/Puffin habitats are simply outstanding! I tend to like the exhibits better than the shows at Sea World, and they are less crowded anyway. I also like the tram ride over the bay and the trip up the sky tower.

  • Other Animal-themed attractions: There's the San Diego Zoo, and the SD Wild Animal Park, both of which are run by the Zoological Society of San Diego. Both are absolutely wonderful to visit, and completely different from each other - there's no overlap.

  • Mission Bay Park is a wonderful place to picnic, go for a stroll, or just find a nice grassy patch to do some quiet reading. Lots of shorebirds to watch, too! Read my article on San Diego Beaches for more info on the different inlets of this large area.
