Televising something like that could only help the terrible ratings the Olympics have been getting overall. After all, who wouldn't want to tune in for a bit of drama on the high seas? It would be every bit as entertaining as watching a gymnast fall off the uneven bars.

Sometimes, when I read just a little line in the local paper about the results of one of the sailing events, I can almost hear the raucous shouts from the spectator boats mixed with the crashing waves and humming rudders.

But then it's a sudden calm, and all I hear is the beating of my own heart, and I have to imagine the colorful spinnakers and the snapping sails. It's sailing at the Olympics. Maybe next time it will make Prime Time. Until then, work on your roll tacks, and follow those puffs, and maybe it will be you we're watching sail across our TV screens in 2004.
