Road Trip 2001

For the past five years during football season we have put our normal lives on hold, for a week or so, and followed our local college football team to some far off city and cheered them on to victory. We just returned home to Florida from this year’s trip to Virginia by way of New Orleans and the Smoky Mts.

The first year we went to watch them play Auburn, we traveled by car and stayed in motels. We had a great time but decided that for the following year it would be much more fun if we took our motorhome, noting that the trip would need to be extended somewhat to make the drive less tiring.

The second year we returned to the campus of Auburn University but we drove the motorhome as planned. We stayed in a small very nice state campground just outside of Auburn, AL. As we had thought, the overall trip was much more fun. The convenience of having the motorhome was unbelievable. The pain this time was that we had to rent a car for local travel while we camped, picking up and returning the car proved to be a real task.

Year Three we really lost it and decided to travel for consecutive road games a week apart and using the motorhome camp in between. Both Games were in Georgia, the first at GA. Tech in Atlanta, the next week was the University Georgia in Athens, GA., a days drive away. Having friends that work at GA. Tech made that segment of the trip easy, we roughed it in their yard and went to the game with them. The following week in Athens, we stayed in a very nice state campground just northeast of the city. The week in between we stayed several days at Stone Mountain near Atlanta, you must put this on your “to do” list as it is quite the natural wonder.

Sometime prior to year four we became aware that there was an informal group of fans that got together each year, formed a caravan, and traveled to games as we had been doing on our own. For year four we decided to join this “train of cars” and traveled to Tuscaloosa, AL. to the University of Alabama. We had a great time and found that the more the merrier was true in this case. But to be honest I missed the motorhome convince.
