Thoughts on the RV Selling Process

© Barry Houseknecht

Here is the thing, I want to buy a new/newer RV and trade in my "old faithful" as part of the deal. I never thought about how selling my RV on my own until the dealers let me know that that my RV, a 1976, 29 ft. Swinger, was something that was not real desirable for them to have on their lot, even though the motorhome is in excellent shape for its age? So now I am trying to put together a game plan to sell my RV myself. I want to be able to advertise it in several different ways, such as local newspaper, Internet listing, trader types magazine, and flyer posts at local RV parks.

The first thing that I need to do is gather any and all information that I will need to make good adds and that way I will be able to answer any questions that may be asked. Here is my list of things I would want to know when buying therefore should expect to be asked the same questions when selling.

1. Make and Model...Example (Swinger, Supreme) now if Swinger is not the manufacturer be sure you know the manufacturers name.

2. Year and length...Know the legal year it was made and the length.

3. Engine and transmission. Know engine size and manufacturer (horsepower and cubic inches) also the transmission # speeds ect and the manufacturer if different than the engine.

4. Engine/transmission options, does it have Banks power or any other factory or after market tricks if so know what benefits those options add to the original engine/ transmission package.

5. Does it have a tow hitch and if so what is the tow capacity of the vehicle. (GCWR)

6. Know all of the weights for the vehicle including GVWR (max. it can weigh loaded) and GCWR (towing cap)

7. Know what both the wholesale and the retail value of the vehicle. This can be found on line for most vehicles also your bank or insurance company should be able to tell you.

8. Determine the price you want for your vehicle based on the wholesale and retail numbers find a price that you are comfortable with.

9. Now decide if you want to list your vehicle as a fixed price or obo (best offer) or let the buyer make the first offer. All the above options have their good and bad points so think about how much hassling you want to do before you decide on how you list your RV.
